The most common career mistakes. How to avoid them?

It takes approx. 3 minutes to read this article

For many of us, a professional career is a marker of self-realization. However, some people manage to quickly climb the career ladder, while others, having specialized education and rich practical experience, have been postponing the time of promotion for years. What is the reason? The career mistakes we most often make.

Money is the priority

You need to realize that money is not the most important thing in a job. Here is a situation you may find yourself in. You quit a low paying but favorite job. You’ve agreed to work in a high-paying but hated job. You have the money, but you are on a straight path to job burnout and lack motivation. But is it really about feeling miserable all the time?

Instead of focusing on money, think about much more important things, such as training, improving your professional skills, taking care of your loved ones, your free time and your health. Also, analyze the long-term financial prospects of your chosen career direction.

Changing jobs too often

There’s nothing wrong with looking for different career opportunities and new paths, especially if you’re young. However, you should still focus on your career goal and carefully consider each hiring and firing to avoid being considered a “job-hopper” by recruiters in the future. Therefore, carefully select vacancies and employers, pay attention not only to working conditions and responsibilities, but also to the financial situation of the company, as well as the atmosphere in the team.

Building a career for others

Your parents told you to become an accountant. So you did. You work in your profession, but you don’t grow and you are unhappy. This is because you chose a profession that is not in line with your desires. Maybe deep down inside you are an artist type?

Choosing the right profession is the basis of success and self-realization. Discover what you are best at and what you would like to do. Don’t let someone else make this choice for you. You can listen to the advice of more experienced people, but treat them as guidelines, not commands.

Waiting to “blow up”

If a major or profession is not chosen properly, sooner or later there will be a crisis. With career is like with health – better to prevent than to cure. Therefore, do not wait until the cup of bitterness overflows. If you feel that what you are doing is not for you, try to go in another direction. Remember, it’s never too late to make a change, and if you take the courage to do so, you can probably gain more than you lose. A sense of professional satisfaction is something that cannot be overstated.

I don’t want to, I can’t and I won’t

Think about how many evenings and weekends you’ve wasted lying on the couch, watching useless shows, doing some nonsense or scrolling through social media posts. There’s nothing wrong with having fun from time to time, but you should also use your time productively. Start learning, exercising, doing something worthwhile – make an effort to change and grow.

Refusing to take on a company project or being unwilling to do work on behalf of a manager that is outside your job description will not help you climb the career ladder either. Don’t refuse to solve problems that can elevate your professional level and add to your knowledge base. This is a chance to learn new skills, show personal qualities in a favorable light, and demonstrate yourself as a professional the company can rely on. Forget the three “NO’s.”
